Roger D. Thompson
1940-2007
The Southeast District Athletic Board is mourning the
recent loss of long time board member and Treasurer Roger D. Thompson.
Roger had served the Southeast District for 33 years. He also served
four (4) terms on the OHSAA Board of Control. Following his retirement
as Assistant Superintendent of the Athens City School District Roger
continued to serve the Southeast Board, first as Secretary/Treasurer and
finally as Treasurer.
Roger spent his life serving kids, both students and
student-athletes. He was a teacher, coach, administrator and also found
time to officiate both football and basketball. As tributes poured in
following his passing two of Roger's traits stood front and center. One
was his keen sense of humor. Roger enjoyed a good laugh. Those closest
to him understood that he could dish out a joke and also take one.
Secondly, and more importantly, was Roger's genuine kindness to others.
He was kind and compassionate to all. Roger radiated a true goodness, a
caring spirit that endeared him to friend and foe alike. The Board lost
a devoted Treasurer and the entire Southeast District lost a friend. He
will be missed.
The family has established the Roger Thompson
Scholarship in his memory. The scholarship will be awarded annually to a
worthy student-athlete in the Southeast District. Contributions may be
made via current board Treasurer Rick Edwards.
